Just shy of her 41st birthday, with a husband and two small children to think about - her daughter then 8 and her son, 5 - Shainman had an oophorectomy and hysterectomy in March 2010, followed by a nipple-and skin-sparing bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction in September. She opted to undergo genetic testing, which showed that she carried the same BRCA1 gene mutation as her sister.

However, after attending an ovarian cancer conference, she felt compelled to request genetic testing and subsequently learned she carried a BRCA1 gene mutation.Īmy Byer Shainman’s gynecologist referred her to a genetic counselor after Jan’s test came back positive. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves. When Amy Byer Shainman’s sister Jan received a uterine and ovarian cancer diagnosis in 2008, Jan was not advised to undergo genetic testing. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. And if you are prepared to base your life on it, then it does not let you down. Our experiences do not prove what you might call a ‘beyond-life’ but they do point to it. One should remember that honest descriptions apply to religious metaphysics as much as they do to any other goods in the supermarket. One should not puff one’s goods in religion. So the proof of the pudding really is in the eating. After all, it is ‘taste and see that the Lord is good’ in the Hebrew Scriptures, and ‘by their fruits ye shall know them’ in the Gospels. It is probably a good way to approach religious matters. And that is something which I, and lots of people, have come to, not through dogma or official teaching, but by experience. But although you cannot speak of an after-life, you can talk about a beyond-life. And there is another problem, too: all one can ever know is life, whether this life, another sort of life or eternal life. When I die both time and space will die with me so there can be no after (nor a before for that matter). I cannot very well speak about the after-life, not because I do not believe in it, but because it is a contradiction.
